Security Aspects of Critical Infrastructure Protection in Anthropogenic Disasters: A Case Study of Belgrade Abstract: Critical infrastructure (CI) is the backbone of modern societies, ensuring the uninterrupted provision of essential services such as energy supply, transportation, telecommunications, water distribution, and healthcare. In an era of increasing anthropogenic disasters—including technological incidents, industrial accidents, and transportation failures—ensuring the security and resilience of CI has become a top priority. These disasters, often caused by human error, technical malfunctions, or cyber threats, can have severe consequences for national security, economic stability, and public health. Therefore, analyzing the security aspects of CI protection is crucial for developing effective risk management strategies and disaster preparedness frameworks. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the security challenges associated with protecting CI in urban environments, with a particular focus on Belgrade, the capital and economic hub of Serbia. A quantitative research method was applied, using a survey conducted on a sample of 200 respondents to assess public awareness of CI protection, perceived threats, and the level of preparedness for potential disasters. The findings indicate a general lack of awareness among the population regarding the significance of CI and its vulnerability to anthropogenic disasters. Moreover, the study highlights the necessity of strengthening preventive measures, improving institutional coordination, and increasing public education on CI protection. The research also examines the legal and strategic frameworks for CI protection in Serbia, identifying key vulnerabilities such as inadequate maintenance, a shortage of trained personnel, and inefficient early warning systems.
