Informing citizens about emergency situations: influence factors and modalities Abstract: The aim of this quantitative research is to provide a scientific explanation of the influence of various factors on the modalities of informing citizens about emergency situations. Special attention has been given to examining the influence of the following factors on information dissemination: gender, age, education, marital status, employment status, parenthood, risk perception, and previous experience. The study was conducted in 2015 using a multi-stage random sampling method, surveying 2,500 citizens across 19 local communities in Serbia. The descriptive statistical analysis revealed that the majority of citizens (58.9%) received information about emergency situations through television, followed by 31.7% through newspapers, 31.2% via household discussions, 28.7% through the Internet, 15.7% via radio broadcasts, 14.3% in schools, and 12% within the family. The inferential statistical analysis showed a statistically significant correlation between television as a primary source of information and factors such as gender, marital status, and employment status. In contrast, radio broadcasts as a source of information were significantly associated with education and previous experience. Furthermore, newspapers and the Internet as information sources were significantly influenced by gender, education, and marital status. Examining the modalities of informing citizens about emergency situations is of great scientific and social importance. The research findings can greatly influence the selection of the most appropriate communication channels for different categories of citizens. The originality of this research lies in its investigation of the untested state of emergency communication strategies in Serbia, aiming to identify optimal methods for informing citizens about emergency situations.
